A 3-year-old San Fernando girl accidentally shot and wounded her 6-year-old brother Thursday after pulling her father’s handgun from under a mattress, San Fernando police said.
Oscar Parra was listed in fair condition with a chest wound at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, a spokeswoman said.
The father, Evodio Parra, 28, said he believed the automatic pistol to be unloaded when he put it between the mattress and the box spring in the master bedroom, investigators reported.
The victim’s sister, Yesenia, apparently was playing with the gun when she hit the boy with a single shot at point-blank range, police said.
The shooting occurred shortly before 5:30 p.m. in the house in the 1300 block of Kewen Street, Officer Mary Romero said. The shooting is being considered accidental, and the father was not arrested, Romero said.
