Boys’ Basketball : Chaminade Falls From 1st as Cathedral Wins, 41-38

Chaminade High was knocked out of a three-way tie for first place in the Santa Fe League after a 41-38 loss to Cathedral on Saturday night that wasn’t decided until the game’s final minute.
Chaminade (7-5, 2-1), which trailed most of the game, shaved Cathedral’s eight-point lead to 38-35 with two minutes to play. But the Eagles’ comeback attempt was unsuccessful.
Cathedral’s Javier Montenegro, who led all players with 19 points, made a layup and a free throw for a three-point play to give Cathedral (3-0 in league play) a 41-35 lead with 30 seconds left. Alex Rigolizzo, who led Chaminade with 12 points, countered with a three-point shot from the top of the key.
John Carolan added 11 points and Chris Bruckner had 13 rebounds for Chaminade, which made 16 of 23 field-goal attempts.
Notre Dame 75, St. John Bosco 64--Kevin Hicks scored 31 points to lead Notre Dame to the Del Rey League win at St. John Bosco. Teammate Bruce Heicke added 21 points.
Bell-Jeff 66, Pater Noster 42--Nick Sanderson had 18 points and 8 rebounds to lead Bell-Jeff in the Santa Fe League game at home.
Bell-Jeff outscored Pater Noster, 22-12, in the fourth quarter.
Mary Star 80, Providence 60--Providence’s troubles continued in the nonleague game at Mary Star (7-5). Providence (0-1, 1-8) shot just 28.6% (16 of 56) from the field and made 27 of 43 free throws.
St. Genevieve 85, La Salle 49--Ruben Aguirre scored 21 points and Mike Cassidy had a school-record 20 assists to lead St. Genevieve to a Santa Fe League win at Harvard.
