MADISON, Wis. — A gunman opened fire outside a coffee shop in the City-County Building today, and at least three people were wounded before he was taken into custody, authorities said.
Names and conditions of the victims were not immediately available. County Executive Rod Matthews initially said a county official had been killed, but authorities later disputed that. Police Officer Ray Maida said a man was in custody, and that he was wounded after officers in the building returned fire. According to witnesses, the gunman fired several shots from a hallway into the coroner’s office. He then apparently entered the office and continued shooting.
