Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Flores Hits Game-Winner for Bolsa Grande, 50-49

Sophomore guard Liz Flores made a 15-foot jump shot with seven seconds left to give Bolsa Grande High School a 50-49 victory over Rancho Alamitos Friday in a Garden Grove League girls’ basketball game at Bolsa Grande.

It was the only lead of the game for Bolsa Grande, which trailed, 48-39, with two minutes left. But Jennifer Tracy and Flores made three-point shots and Tracy Swatfager scored on a three-point play to tie the score, 48-48, with 20 seconds left.

Bolsa Grande then fouled Christy Kalbhenn of Rancho Alamitos with 14 seconds left. Kalbhenn made only one of two free throws, setting up Flores’ winning basket.

Flores finished with 16 points and Tracy added 22 points and 15 rebounds for Bolsa Grande (7-6 overall, 3-2 in league). Kalbhenn led Rancho Alamitos with 25 points and Jenny Newsome added 14.

In other Garden Grove League play:

Santiago 36, Los Amigos 35--Carolyn Burns scored 13 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for host Santiago. Burns, a 6-foot center, scored 8 points in the fourth quarter as Los Amigos switched from a zone to a man-to-man offense. Santiago led, 19-8, at the half but only 23-17 at the end of three quarters.

Burns is the sister of former Santiago quarterback Rick Burns, who started at Rancho Santiago College this season.

Robin Cairez, a junior guard, was the only other Santiago player in double figures with 12 points. Santiago is 9-3 overall and 4-1 in league.

Wendi Gilbert scored a team-high 13 points for Los Amigos, which is 1-4 in league.

La Quinta 67, Garden Grove 21--Sue Paulsen had 17 points and 8 steals to lead the Aztecs (12-3, 5-0) at Garden Grove. Donna Gondringer had 12 points and 18 rebounds for La Quinta, which led, 37-9, at halftime.
