Local News in Brief : Developer Fee Refunds
- Share via
The Los Angeles school board voted 5-1 Monday to refund nearly $1.1 million in special fees it had collected from 11 developers.
As a result of a state law that went into effect last year, school districts were required to collect the fees--up to $1.50 a square foot for residential development and 25 cents a square foot for commercial projects--in order to qualify for state school construction funds.
But following protests from a number of developers--including builders of several senior citizen housing projects and church facilities--the board granted exemptions in 11 instances and returned the funds. The district raised about $35 million for school construction last year through such fees.
