A U.S. Senate subcommittee said it will investigate the alleged involvement of Panamanian officials, including the country’s military leader, Gen. Manuel A. Noriega, in drug smuggling and money laundering. The investigations subcommittee of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee has scheduled a hearing on the allegations for Thursday. “If the allegations about the complicity of Panamanian officials are true, we must take immediate action to stop these officials from continuing to prime the pipeline of illegal drug profits,” Sen. William V. Roth Jr. (R-Del.) said in a statement. Scheduled witnesses include William P. Rosenblatt, an assistant commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service.
