The Soviet Union defeated Czechoslovakia, 83-49, to win the Olympic women’s basketball qualifying tournament at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, leading five other teams into the Games at Seoul.
The Soviets finished the round-robin competition with a 7-0 won-lost record and 14 points. Also qualifying were Yugoslavia, China, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia and Australia. The United States, defending Olympic champion, and South Korea, the hosting country, had byes into the Games.
