The selection of Frank Hamilton Talbot, executive director of the California Academy of Sciences, as director of the National Museum of Natural History was announced in Washington by the Smithsonian Institution. Talbot will assume the post next Jan. 15, the Smithsonian said. The largest of the Smithsonian’s 14 museums and galleries, the Museum of Natural History has a staff of 600, including 120 scientists. Talbot, 58, a native of Durban, South Africa, is an expert in fish ecology and coral reefs and has been active in developing exhibitions and education programs in natural history.
