Local News in Brief : Countywide : Part of Doheny Beach Remains Closed by Spill

Parts of Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, where a 500,000-gallon raw sewage spill occurred last week, will remain closed today but may be reopened Wednesday, a county health official said.
Steven K. Wong, assistant director of the Environmental Health Agency, said that tests showed some contamination near the mouth of San Juan Creek at Capistrano Bay but that the area closed to swimmers and surfers may be reduced from the original 1,000 feet to 500 feet today.
The spill originated at a clogged 12-inch sewer line in a vacant area near Mission Viejo Mall. The effluent flowed into a flood-control channel, through Oso and Trabuco creeks to San Juan Creek and the ocean.
