Wayne Curtis’ description of Francisco Miranda as a dreamy, incompetent man is not entirely fair (Viewpoints, Abandoning Ship Can Be the Best Option, July 10).
In Latin American history, Miranda is considered to be the precursor of Bolivar, as biographer Thomas Rourke has acknowledged. It is true that he surrendered the revolutionary army, but this surrender was not arbitrary or without strong reasons. History has vindicated Miranda’s memory: Today in the pantheon of Caracas, next to Bolivar’s tomb, there is an empty sarcophagus of marble in his name.
Morale: Abandon ship if the captain is crazy, but don’t abandon all of his or her ideas.
