AMRITSAR, India — The bodies of 41 people tortured to death by Sikh extremists have been found hidden in rubble in Amritsar’s Golden Temple during a seven-week cleanup, a senior police official said today.
The bodies were uncovered during the removal of a 40-foot-high mound of rubble that had stood in Sikhdom’s holiest shrine since a 1984 army assault to flush out extremists fighting for an independent Sikh state in Punjab. “The victims were killed mainly on the suspicion of being police informers,” senior Amritsar policeman Suresh Arora told reporters.
