BRUSSELS — Police detained 57 political extremists Saturday during an international neo-Nazi rally at Kortrijk, near the French border.
They held 38 ultra-rightists, including nine British “skinheads,” who gathered in violation of a police order banning public rallies for the weekend. Nineteen leftists, involved in skirmishes with the right-wingers, were also briefly held. There were no violent incidents, police said.
Paramilitary gendarmes were brought in to boost local police forces after the Flemish National Front party decided to go ahead with a meeting of right-wing groups from several West European countries.
